For the past twenty seven years, Hawai’i General Store has been a hale ku’ai (retail store) and gathering place for the PNW Hawaiian community here, in Seattle. Our store exists to support the Hawaiian community and people who love Hawai’i both on the Continent and back home in The Islands. We strive to bring the best, traditional and new, items from Hawai’i to the PNW and create warm, light and fun-filled space. Sharing aloha is at the core of what we do, making sure people leave the store feeling like they’ve had a reprieve from the busy outside world and just spent a little time in the islands.
Position Summary:
The Retail Store Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the store, ensuring excellent customer service, driving sales, managing a small team, and maintaining the store’s visual and operational standards. This role requires someone who understands local values, has strong leadership skills, and takes pride in fostering a positive, aloha-filled and community-focused shopping environment.
Key Responsibilities (with the help of those they manage):
- Lead daily store operations, including opening and closing procedures
- Deliver exceptional customer service aligned with the spirit of aloha
- Hire, train, schedule, and manage a small team of retail associates
- Monitor inventory levels, place reorders, and coordinate with local vendors
- Handle cash management, sales reporting, and bank deposits
- Maintain store cleanliness, organization, and visual merchandising standards
- Plan and execute in-store promotions, events, and seasonal displays
- Uphold compliance with health, safety, and retail operation guidelines
- Address customer concerns and resolve issues professionally and promptly
- Act as a brand ambassador within the community and foster local partnerships
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of retail management or supervisory experience
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Passion for aloha, customer service and community engagement
- Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, social media and basic retail reporting
- Ability to multitask and work independently
- Appreciation for Hawaiian culture and values.
- Availability to work some weekends, holidays, and occasional events
Preferred Traits:
- Knowledge of local-style designers, artisans, and Hawaiian cultural practices
- Creative mindset for merchandising and Hawai’i themed promotions
- Strong work ethic with a hands-on approach
- Ability to speak some 'Ōlelo Hawai'i

Position Summary:
We are looking for an enthusiastic, customer-focused, aloha-ful Sales Associate to join our store ‘ohana. The ideal candidate will embody the aloha spirit and assist customers with a friendly attitude, provide knowledgeable service, and ensure the store remains clean, organized, and well-stocked.
Key Responsibilities (with the help of those they manage):
- Greet customers with aloha
- Assist customers in locating products and making purchasing decisions
- Operate our Point of Sale system and handle cash, credit card, and other transactions accurately
- Restock shelves, create displays and maintain visual merchandising standards
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the sales floor, fitting rooms, and checkout areas
- Monitor inventory levels and report low stock to management
- Answer customer inquiries in-person and by phone
- Support opening and closing procedures as needed
- Uphold store policies and procedures, including safety protocols
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Prior retail or customer service experience is a plus
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Friendly, reliable, and team-oriented
- Able to work flexible hours, including some weekends and holidays
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs
- Appreciation for and understanding of Hawaiian culture and local values
- Ability to sew lei and reference names and places in Hawai’i with ease
Preferred Traits:
- Ability to speak ‘Olelo Hawai’i
- A history or familiarity with hula, surfing, canoe paddling, lei making or any other Hawaiian cultural activities or crafts.
- Familiarity with Hawaiian/Pacific Island products and culture
- An understanding of social media and how to make and manage posts
- A connection with the PNW Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander communities
- Experience working in a fast-paced retail environment
